Title: Mosby’s Drug Guide for Nursing Student. 12th edition
Reviewer: Nicola Hamilton
What was it like?
It is a comprehensive reference book for students on all the most popular drugs used. The inside cover is excellent in the way that it shows you how to use /read the book, showing the format for each drug, the relevance of the colour coding and the use of bold /italic fonts. Each drug is listed in alphabetical order, with the category it sits within, actions, uses, contraindications, dosage and routes, adverse effects, interactions and nursing considerations. In addition, I found the black box warning to be useful although the language could be simplified further for a nursing student (and a RGN !).
I generally felt the book was too detailed for nursing students and the language would benefit with a glossary to understand the text. The book includes a lot of drugs and I wondered what the criteria was to include them as the amount of data could be viewed as quite offputting.
What were the highlights?
The inclusion of new drugs for 2017. The pages look bright and colourful and interesting to the reader.
Strengths & weaknesses:
Good index, strong graphics, liked the colour coding, loads of detail.
Who should read it?
Targeting student nurses is limiting the target market; It would be equally suitable for registered nurses and above.
