‘This study guide would be useful for student nurses or return to practice nurses wanting to improve their knowledge’
Title: Study guide for Foundations of Nursing, 7TH Edition
Author: Cooper Gosnell
Publisher: Elsevier Inc
Reviewer: Helen Reeves, clinical nurse manager, St Giles Walsall Hospice
What was it like?
This is a study guide aims to prepare student nurses for patient care experiences. It is a study guide that should be used in conjunction with the textbook Foundations in Nursing.
What were the highlights?
It covers a wide range of nursing topics and uses a good array of learning activities to ensure learning objectives are met. The study guide also has an online learning resource which gives the answers for all study guide questions and also provides additional resources for example, a fluids and electrolyte tutorial and video clips as well.
Strengths & weaknesses:
It is well set out and covers a wide rage of nursing topics. This edition also uses different types of learning activities ranging from short answer questions, multiple choice, fill in the blank, matching and true and false. I particularly like the use of crosswords as it shows innovation and will keep the student engaged in the learning activity. Unfortunately is based on American nursing practice, which makes its relevance to nursing within the UK limited. It would be best used for nurses who are intending on moving to the US and wanting to practice nursing over there. It would prepare them for their NCLEX examination.
Who should read it?
This study guide would be useful for student nurses or return to practice nurses wanting to improve their knowledge. It would need to be used in conjunction with the Foundations of Nursing textbook and the online resources via Evolve would also need to be used to get best use of this study guide. This study guide would also be useful for UK Nurses wanting to work in the USA.
