What was it like?

An excellent book! An absolute must read for anyone with an autoimmune condition and/or those who care for them. This book builds upon the expanding and evolving evidence base that charts the role that diet and choice of foods we eat has in controlling autoimmune disease. The book is so well written by Dr Terry Wahls (founder of the Wahls Foundation) who herself has multiple sclerosis. It gives the reader an insight into what it is like to live with MS and how by observing how certain foods trigger an increase in her symptoms of Ms Terry has overcome her MS and now uses her knowledge to generate guides for others to try.

What were the highlights?

This marriage of science and personal testimony is a unique approach and one that is convincing, courageous, engaging and motivating. The author challenges you to try any of the approaches that are recommended in this book for example; The Wahls diet, Paleo and Paleo Plus, advocating that they will do no harm but may improve your quality of life immensely.

Strengths & weaknesses:

Each section of this book is easy to read and relate to. As you move through the book you are guided to consider the current food choices you make and encouraged through a series of weekly planners and recipes to make “easy” changes to your diet all aimed at improving your overall health and alleviating/reducing disease symptoms. Care is taken to present a holistic approach to sustaining lifestyle and food choices. The section on vitamins and minerals is very informative in particular, but the section on how to reduce your “toxic load” is well worth a read to see how everyday taken for granted items we blindly buy like household products and toothpaste can over a period of time, have a negative impact on your ability to live well with an autoimmune condition.

Who should read it?

This is a very informative book. This book is truly a beacon of hope for all those living with any autoimmune conditions; coeliac disease, thyroid dysfunction, MS, Rheumatoid arthritis and many more. This book deserves a place on all nursing and inter professional curricula and it must make its way to a different conversation; one which mobilises communities to prevent illness. To an active and participatory society wide approach that secures commitments from food suppliers, food producers, the catering industry and government policy makers as they collectively exercise their power to improve the health of the populations they serve. This is a revolutionary book with the power to improve the health of everyone who reads it but also the health of nations through the modest approaches cited within.
