Title: Understanding Nursing Research: Building an evidence based practice

Authors: Susan K Grove; Jennifer R Gray; Nancy Burns

Publisher: Elsevier Inc

Reviewer: Helen Reeves, Clinical Nurse Manager, St Giles Walsall Hospice

What was it like?

Understanding nursing research is a book that aims to equip student nurses or nurses new to research with the ability to be able to read, critically appraise and synthesize evidence so that it can be used to make changes in practice. The book is separated into 14 chapters and covers topics ranging from an introduction to nursing research, an introduction to quantitative and qualitative research to examining ethics in nursing research and building an evidence based nursing practice.

What were the highlights?

As a new research nurse this book made understanding research easy to understand and in a format that was easy to follow. The chapters break down what each one will cover, making information easy to find. I especially liked the chapter on understanding and critically appraising the literature review. This was of great benefit for a new research nurse trying to understand the importance of literature reviews. Research also comes with lots of new terms and the glossary at the back of the book make these terms easy to find and understand their meaning.

Strengths & weaknesses:

The format of the book is excellent. Each chapter is broken down into sections and highlights what each chapter will cover. This makes finding out information quick and easy. The book also identifies learning outcomes for each chapter and also highlights key terms and where they can be found in each chapter. A great text book useful for nurses or all grades, from students up to management.

Who should read it?

This would be excellent for student nurses, nurses new to research or any nurse with an interest in research. This book would be valuable resource to all nurses and health professionals wanting to be able to critically appraise research and to embed research evidence based practice into their job and future nursing practice.
