Second phase of challenging change campaign launches

Today Nursing Times and its sister title HSJ, in association with NHS Improving Quality, launches the second phase of its campaign on achieving better transformational change within the NHS.

The Change Challenge initiative uses a crowdsourcing methodology, created by our partner Clever Together, to enable users to exchange and rate ideas. Launched last month by Nursing Times, together with its sister title HSJ and NHS Improving Quality, the aim is to identify the best ways to help the NHS drive real and sustainable change.

During the first phase of the campaign, we asked readers what are the barriers to bottom up change, and what are the fundamental building blocks for change? So far 1,455 people have got involved, between them offering 7,500 contributions.

The barriers identified were:

  1. Confusing  Strategies
  2. Over controlling leadership
  3. One-way communication
  4. Poor workforce planning
  5. Stifling innovation
  6. Playing it safe
  7. Poor project management
  8. Undervaluing staff
  9. Inhibiting environment
  10. Perverse incentives

The fundamental building blocks for change were:

  1. Inspiring and supportive leadership
  2. Collaborative working
  3. Flexibility & adaptability
  4. Smarter use of resources
  5. Autonomy and trust
  6. Challenging the status quo
  7. A call to action
  8. Fostering an open culture
  9. Nurturing our people
  10. Seeing the bigger picture
  11. Thought diversity

For the second phase of this campaign we will be asking readers to further engage with how the NHS delivers change and come up with solutions to the barriers to change as suggested by contributors.

Our conversation begins today. All ideas will be shared anonymously and refined by participants.
