Doing the rounds

Poem submitted by Sue Mayer

It’s three in the morning, and all is calm.
time to do the rounds, check no-one’s come to harm.
Tip-toe we creep with just a torch light,
Mrs T what are you doing? You gave me such a fright.
Long white hair and nightie to the floor,
looking like a ghost and making for the door,
come back to bed and go to sleep.

We continue our rounds, using the torch as we peep.

Oh my what a scare! There’s an empty bed,
the patient has gone but we dont know where..
Suddenly we hear a scream, we run from the ward
the buzzer is going, its bed twenty-four
There’s a man in my room! Comes the shout
don’t be silly Mrs B, as we escort him out.
With Mr T  all tucked up in bed
we check on the others, particularly Fred,
Fred likes to wonder often looking for his shoes,
we walk him around, it keeps him amused.
Poor Mrs B has a very wet bed, she won’t wake up
and we wonder if she’s dead!
Leave me alone! She suddenly shouts
but your bed is wet you really should get out…
No I won’t, now bugger off!
Thanks says staff nurse, we’ll consider ourselves told,
but we cant leave you like this, you’ll just get cold.
So rolling the patient we changed her sheets
but she’s still not happy, we’ve disturbed her sleep.
By now its nearly four in the morning
were all feeling tired and can’t stop yawning.
Time for a coffee,
that’s what you think!
Buzzers are going,
no time for a drink..
