'Welcome to the new look Nursing Times'

In the 109 years since Nursing Times launched, nursing has changed radically and we’ve been there changing with it.

This change has never been faster than in the past few years, and while the profession has moved with the times so have we. The number of people opting to access NT using smartphones and tablets has rocketed. In fact, nearly half of all the people who visit nursingtimes.net do so using a phone or tablet.

So six months ago we started work on making nursingtimes.net suit the modern nursing profession.

Based on a mix of feedback from our subscribers, analysis of how you use Nursing Times and third-party expertise, the new-look nursingtimes.net has been redesigned and relaunched with you in mind.

What are the benefits?

You’ve probably already noticed that the website has a cleaner, more minimalist look, which will make it easier to see what’s new and what’s relevant to you. We know that you are busy nurses, and need to find everything quickly and efficiently, so we’ve redesigned all the elements of this website to help you do just that.

You may not have spotted our new headings. Nursing is a varied profession and we wanted to make sure every nurse can find something of interest within seconds of arriving on the website so we’ve created a new ‘Roles’ section where you can find the latest news, clinical articles, opinion pieces and book reviews that are about your area of nursing and your patient group.

This new section, and our redesigned ‘Clinical Subjects’ section, have opened up our archive of over 5,000 peer-reviewed articles plus opinion and analysis, book reviews and content written specifically for student nurses.

Not only is it easier to find the articles you want, it’s now easier to read them. The website adapts to different screen sizes so whether you’re reading this on your phone, your tablet, laptop or desktop computer you will be able to do so without fiddly scrolling and zooming.

And in case you missed it, Nursing Times Learning has also been relaunched in the past few weeks to help you prepare you for revalidation. You can use the learning units (as well as our clinical archive) for completing the 35 hours of CPD the Nursing and Midwifery Council requires of you. And to make it even easier, we have created a Learning Passport for you to save all your revalidation activities – reflection, feedback, professional conversation and confirmation as well as CPD - in one place.

Of course, we’re always breaking news and carrying out exclusive investigations and surveys to report on, analyse, support and campaign for nurses on issues that matter to nursing. Every day you’ll find a wealth of nursing news on our home page and news section – so if you want to know what’s happening in nursing and healthcare – and get the detail on what that means to you, check there first.

    My first impression, was that to an extent the redesign is to make the website 'more suited to smaller devices than desktop pcs'.

    But I have noticed - based on my own use, which is on a rather ancient library computer system - that the new website 'seems to be considerably faster' than the old one was.

    Thanks Fran,

    I do have a question, about the new website. Instead of just appearing, I've noticed that now I get 'your comment will appear shortly' - does this indicate 'filtering' (i.e. 'a Letters Editor' deciding whether to post a comment) ?

    Also, I recently sent an e-mail to a nurse who wrote a piece which appeared in NT, and having swapped a couple of e-mails, she tells me 'that you should write something for Nursing Times'. It isn't at all clear to me, that as a layman, NT accepts the type of thing I would be interested in writing. So, what exactly can 'laymen' submit to NT for publication these days ?

    Hi,

    We've not changed how we moderate comments (without employing someone full time to do so we'd struggle to check every comment that goes up!) so I suspect this is just different messaging as there tends to be a delay of a few seconds before a comment appears. I will keep an eye on it though.

    I like the disq.us system where one can signal dis/agreement without a need to reply and also dialogue directly with another poster which I think has a number of advantages in a professional journal. I have raised this several times with the reply that it would come with a software update. I am disappointed to see this is still not the case. I do not know what other readers think about this.

    Re the previous comment, personally I'm quite keen on 'open debate' re dis/agreement, and the option to include your e-mail address if someone wants to 'take it private'. But, there are some disadvantages, with those. And some advantages, with disq.us.

    I have always liked the systems which allow you to 'like/dislike' - or, even, just 'like' which is how the BMJ system seems to work - people's comments by clicking on a button: that doesn't seem to be available, on NT at the moment.

    By the way Fran, it is only the 'Comment submitted' part of the message I have a minor issue with (because submission doesn't usually imply automatic acceptance).

    If that wasn't in the box you get - if it just said 'Your comment will appear shortly' - I would not have commented about it.

  • is the comments index page still available listing the most recent comments? it gives faster access to articles of interest than the home page with its headlines and pictures.

    You learn something, every day.

    I've browsed this website for years, and I wasn't aware that there had ever been a part of the NT website listing the most recent comments. It is a feature of theBMJ website, which I use and I became aware of almost immediately. The BMJ page area listing the most recent rapid responses (in NT terms, comments) is prominent on the homepage.

    Thank you for your comment, personally I agree that the comments system would be improved with the option to reply directly to one comment. Unfortunately the decision was made not to add this feature during this upgrade. The digital team at Emap are aware that we would like this feature and customer comments help to add strength to the argument.

    Completely understand, I am looking into changing this messaging as the comment does appear immediately so the current messaging is somewhat misleading.
