Early shift

Poem submitted by Simon McKeown

Around me, teapot, milk and sugar,

And there’s my baccy tin, fork (hospital issue),

Mobile ‘phone, books (Ginsberg, Kerouac and Blake),

Yesterday’s paper, sock (worn once),

DVDs and tapes, timesheets,

Bottle of aftershave,

Massive tea mug.

It’s 5.20 a.m. and I’m awake,

Work brewing in my head.

  • It's like Tracey Emin NHS style,
And made me think for a while
There's no pain like an early
    After a late, it's unearthly
Just came off a 12 hour shift
    My grey matter all adrift
To liken work to a pot of tea
    Makes absolute sense to me.....

  • I'm sorry, but these are just a very lame attempt at the "hip, beat poetry" cult of the late 1950s, early 1960s. Retro? No, just rubbish!

  • I sought of agree, but then at 5.30 in the morning I doubt I could do any better, and at least anonymous' 12-Jun-2010 11:43 pm poem actually rhymed ........

  • At 5.20 in the morning the last thing I would be wanting to do prior to a 12 hour shift is write poetry.
