Paediatric nurses and those working in neonatal intensive therapy departments have been alerted to a fault with paediatric ventilator breathing systems.

Paediatric nurses and those working in neonatal intensive therapy departments have been alerted to a fault with paediatric ventilator breathing systems.

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency said it has received reports of Viasys auto drain water traps failing to drain accumulated fluid.

It is urging caution in the use of all Viasys paediatric breathing systems until the extent of the problem is known.

The agency said: 'If an alternative breathing system is not available ensure the manufacturer's recommended pre-use checks are strictly followed and the water trap's function is closely monitored during use.'
