Patient safety alert over suprapubic catheters

  • Comment

English and Welsh hospitals have been alerted to the safety risks of inserting suprapubic catheters incorrectly after three patients died and seven were severely harmed.

The National Patient Safety Agency (NPSA) has issued guidance to help healthcare professionals insert the catheters safely without piercing the bowel.

Recommendations include using ultrasound machines to accurately navigate the catheter drainage tube into the bladder.

National guidelines on best practice for this common procedure are being developed by the British Association of Urological Surgeons (BAUS).
