Patients unaware of breast screening for over 70s

  • Comment

Half of older women do not realise they can request to continue breast screening once they reach 70, suggest the results of a survey published in the British Journal of Cancer.

Invitations from the national screening programme stop at 70, but women can request to continue screening. However, the survey, completed by 400 women aged 70 and over, found 52 per cent were unaware they could request a mammography by voluntary self-referral and were unaware how to arrange this. Three quarters said they would attend if invited and 90 per cent felt screening should be offered to all women regardless of age or health.
