Pay hike plan for NMC chairperson

  • Comment
The new chairperson of the NMC council is set to receive a salary of nearly £50,000 –almost double the amount paid for their predecessor.

The post of chairperson will replace that of president from the beginning of next year under a shake-up of the council’s structure.

A report drawn up for the regulator by management consultants has recommended that the chairperson should receive a salary of £48,000.

Instead of a salary, former president Nancy Kirkland’s employer received a £20,000 reimbursement for time she took off to discharge her NMC duties.

Council members would receive a salary of £12,000 a year, instead of the current £260 per day spent on NMC business.

Under the new pay structure, which has yet to be approved, the predicted total wage bill for the NMC’s council would be £204,000 per year.

Gail Adams, Unison’s head of nursing, said: ‘Registration fees have gone up. They should not go to give NMC council members more money. I would be very concerned about that.’

The regulator has also appointed Graham Smith as interim chief executive.
