Pay rise half the national average

  • Comment
Nurses’ pay rises for next year could be half the national average of workers in the private sector, latest figures suggest.

Both the government and NHS Employers have recommended rises of just 2% for all staff on Agenda for Change pay scales in 2008–2009.

But data, based on 30 pay settlements covering 434,889 employees for the three months to the end of January 2008, shows average pay increases are running at 4%.

Deals looked at by the Incomes Data Services include those for railway maintenance staff and electricians. It said inflation was pushing up pay settlements.

The November retail prices index, published just before Christmas, rose to 4.3%, up from 4.2% in the year to October 2007.
