The Royal College of Midwives is to extend its membership to all health workers within maternity services.
Maternity Support Workers (MSWs), and other health workers employed in a role which supports midwives in the work place, will be able to join the college from 1 April.
RCM general secretary Cathy Warwick said: ‘This is a hugely positive step for the college and for the wider maternity team. We want maternity support workers to know that they are a valued and important member of the team, and that their contribution and development matters.
‘Whilst the focus of the delivery of maternity care is the midwife, MSWs do a very valuable job in their own right,’ she said.
‘They also free up midwives’ time enabling them to deliver more direct care to women. Because of this it makes absolute sense to include MSWs in our membership,’ she added.
