Minimum alcohol price 'will save £700m'

Raising the price of alcohol will not stop heavy drinkers from drinking!!! They will just find other ways of getting the money to pay for it, whether that is by not going on holiday or not feeding the family properly. The majority of problem drinkers are from underprivelidged areas where money is already short, however, these are areas where a large amount of money is already spent on non-essentials e.g. cigarettes, betting shops, satellite dishes, package holidays. These are also the areas where child poverty is rife and always has been. If we look back at previous decades when poverty was much worse than today we can see that pubs were still full of heavy drinkers. All that happened is that the familys of these drinkers suffered more. It will be the same again. Increase the price of alcohol and see the amount of cheap junkfood eaten increase and the amount of children wearing cheap clothes increase. Heavy drinkers are selfish and raising the price of their beer won't change them.
