Barriers to managing and improving quality


Driving quality up IS the reason behind the restructuring process now under way despite the many red herrings introduced by those who do not want change. My perspecive is this. Unlike the thrust of this article which indicates that 'lack of leadership in delivering quality was identified as the second-largest barrier', I would put is as the clear front runner as a barrier. By a wide margin. That is why we get pockets of excellence in the NHS that far outshine the norm. Pro active clinicians band nurses themselves have taken over effectively and customers (or patients) notice an entirely different atmosphere of 'can do' about the place. Leave it to bureaucratic leadership and what do you get? Dull eyed practitioners filling out endless boring forms while simple interventions go unimplemented and people die as a result. Been there seen it done it as they say. Not good enough. Inspirational leadership is required. People may work a bit harder as a result but the outcomes and general atmosphere more than compensate making for a nice place to work in not a tediously boring dump where sloth and avoidance of problems by enforced cover ups are the routine norm.
