The simple compression bandaging system will, if properly-applied, make a significant improvement. See Guest JF et al. Clinical outcomes and cost-effectiveness of three alternative compression systems used in the
management of venous leg ulcers. J Wound Care. 2015 Jul;24(7):300-10.

Why is this not being done in primary care?

It is absolutely essential that the burden of care is taken up, in part, by AQPs and, that the pathway to AQP status is accelerated considerably.

  • Comment on: Half of hospital staff failing to 'adequately wash uniforms at home'

    Richard White's comment 1 April, 2015 3:57 pm

The whole issue of soft surface contamination and infection control is an utter shambles in the NHS. The literature has evidence to the effect that soft surfaces are a major source of HCAIs yet little or nothing is done about it. This research group has done patients a service in highlighting the problem with respect to nurses' uniforms, now will we see action from Infection Control or Clinical Microbiology????

  • Comment on: Government criticised over lack of urgency on sepsis

    Richard White's comment 18 September, 2014 10:34 am

For clinicians and patients alike, I can highly recommend the Sepsis Trust a dedicated charity. Their website includes details of the "Sepsis Six" diagnostic and therapeutic criteria. We have the necessary clinical experts and best practice guidelines here in the UK! It is a matter of implementation - as ever.

  • Comment on: Trust aims to curb pressure ulcers with special mattresses

    Richard White's comment 30 May, 2014 7:29 pm

I suspect that there is much more to this study than is reported here.

As others have commented, the situation is far from clear.

The staff involved must insist that NT makes clear that mattresses alone, without appropriate nursing care do not prevent or heal pressure ulcers.

What is the true picture regarding the stats?? We need to know the details.
