Nurse goes extra mile with guitar lesson for patient

  • Comment

A nurse who used his own time to help a young patient learn the guitar has been praised by his trust.

Nick Birchall was named “employee of the month” for May by University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust.

Mr Birchall works as a staff nurse on the children’s ward at the trust’s Royal Stoke University Hospital.

He said: “The patient had been placed with us temporarily due to social care issues. We got chatting and he said he’d like to learn to play.”

After finishing a night shift, Mr Birchall went home to collect his guitar and then returned to work immediately so the patient could begin their first lesson.

Janet Hagan, matron for child health, said: “Nick didn’t tell us what he was planning, so we were really surprised to see him again so soon.

“He went way beyond his duty to support this child at a really difficult time and I am incredibly proud of him for doing it,” she said.

Mr Birchall, who has been working for the trust for just over two and a half years, said he was “very lucky to be part of a fantastic team”.
