Online support boosts confidence for teenagers with allergies

  • Comment

Tailored online support can help reduce feelings of isolation among teenagers with asthma and allergies, according to a Canadian study in the Journal of Pediatric Nursing.

Researchers assessed 28 adolescents supported via weekly online chats with a nurse and peer mentor - an older youth also with asthma or allergies - for three months.

Subjects could also email one another between sessions and post messages on an online bulletin board.

The authors said: “Social isolation and loneliness were significantly reduced. Youths reported gaining confidence and a sense of normality.”
