Mountain rescue helps nurses reach snowbound patients

  • Comment

A mountain rescue team came to the aid of district nurses in Cumbria hit by bad weather earlier this month, helping them battle through snow and ice to deliver vital care.

Nurses from the Cumbria Partnership Foundation Trust described the assistance they received from the Coniston Mountain Rescue Team as “fantastic”, after the voluntary crew helped them reach patients amid treacherous conditions on 5 February.

The nurses said they would not have been able to get to people needing essential treatment, including insulin injections, without the team’s help and all-terrain vehicle.

“I drove as far as I could and they took me the rest of the way and picked me up again after the visits,” said Jackie Clough (pictured), one of the district nurses on duty.

“The roads were very dangerous and the visibility was poor – there was no way to get there by car, she said. “We really appreciate the help they gave us to do our job. They showed wonderful community spirit.”

Mountain rescue team member Roy Lake (also pictured) said: “We are happy to help in situations like this anytime. It was a great change for us, to be able to directly help our local community. Often we are called to help visitors to the area, so it was rewarding to be able to directly support local people.”
