Guidance published to help identify postnatal depression

Guidance to help midwives and health visitors with the “challenge” of identifying women at high risk for mood disorders in the perinatal period has been published.

The Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network has launched a guideline on the management of perinatal mood disorders.

It updates and expands upon a previous document on postnatal depression and puerperal psychosis, which was published in 2002.

It provides recommendations to guide identification and risk reduction, as well as issues around balancing the potential benefits and harms of medication use.
