Rotation scheme for newly qualifieds


A rotation scheme to give newly-qualified nurses a greater variety of experience has been started by Norfolk and Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust.

As revealed in the summer, the scheme is intended to give newly-qualified nurses rounded development during their first year in practice. They will be employed by a locality rather than a service, and will have opportunities to work across services.

The mental health trust said the scheme was intended to provide an opportunity to “upskill” staff in areas outside their normal practice, improve working relationships across services, support personal development, and also to improve staff retention and prevent burnout.

Michele Allott, deputy director of nursing at the trust, said: “This initiative ensure that nurses identify the areas which best suit strengths and will develop multi-skilled practitioners who will be able to deliver high quality care for service users across a range of services.”

  • I agree with the above. It has been in practice in a number of Trusts I worked at over the last 10 years. My current hospital got rid of the scheme five years ago as the newly qualified nurses said it was rubbish.

  • If this is done with the right clinical support it will work, i did this in australia. After qualifying i couldn't get a job in the UK so moved overseas and got a job on a structured clinical rotational programme. This allowed me to develop my skills as a newly qualified nurse whilst building up knowledge in areas i hadn't been exposed to during my training. It gave me new ideas about where i wanted specialise.

  • I did this back in 1998 down in Plymouth and think all newly qualified should have this opportunity. It gave me a great insight as a newly qualified nurse into the nursing role in 3 different clinical areas.

  • I think that it is a good idea. As a newly qualified nurse you will get expierence in all the fields. It would be good if this is also done in mental health. I think I would have benefitted from it more.
