Care Quality Commission inspectors have identified Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals Trust to be in breach of essential standards relating to ratios of midwives to mothers.
The CQC carried out an unannounced inspection at the trust on 8 and 9 November, which focused on the maternity units at the Princess Royal and the Royal Sussex County Hospitals.
In his weekly message to trust staff, interim chief executive Chris Adcock said: “We will receive our formal report within two weeks. However, I am very pleased to say that their informal verbal feedback was very positive.
“We were found to be compliant with all of the standards assessed except our midwife-to-mum ratio.”
Mr Adcock said the trust had approved funding in September to recruit 15 more midwives, eight of whom would start work “in two weeks and the rest will be in post by April”.
