A Midlands hospital is conducting the UK’s first “tweetathon” from a maternity unit today.

University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust is giving Twitter users a glimpse behind the scenes at its maternity ward.

The event is part the trust’s “Maternity March” programme – a month-long celebration of motherhood.

The trust said it was looking to social media to “open a window” into its maternity services for local residents and a wider online audience.

Starting at 8am and following a 12 hour shift, the initiative will highlight the mothers and babies on the ward, as well as the ward’s staff.

It will be the first time any UK NHS hospital has tweeted live from its maternity unit.

The trust’s head of midwifery Carmel McCalmont said:  “We are really looking forward to giving the public a glimpse of what goes on behind the scenes.”

Tweeting from the trust’s profile @nhsuhcw members of the communications team will shadow the staff on the ward to share pictures, expert advice and real-time updates on the trust’s latest arrivals, as well as fielding questions from the public via Twitter.

The Twitter hashtag for the event is #MaternityMarch.
