Urine test could predict pre-eclampsia

Testing the urine of pregnant women before their 20th week of pregnancy to analyse levels of protein could predict pre-eclampsia risk, UK research has found.

The University of Leicester and University Hospitals of Leicester Trust study involved 145 patients at risk of pre-eclampsia, of which 11 developed the condition.

Urine sample analysis revealed five proteins that correctly predicted pre-eclampsia with 92 per cent accuracy.

The study was presented in the US earlier this month as part of the American Society of Nephrology Renal Week.
