#NurChat - A positive placement

We were delighted to introduce Lizzie (@dollyxface) as guest host for this chat. Lizzie suggested this topic, and as a student nurse herself she has first-hand experience of being a student in a placement environment.

The discussion began by asking: what factors determine whether a placement is viewed as a positive one or not? Students and mentors shared their opinions on this point:

There were many points made that claimed the positivity of a placement can be determined not only by the attitude of the student but also the availability and willingness of the mentor. If a student has a negative or indifferent attitude to begin with, it doesn’t make a good impression with their mentor or other staff members.

Several mentors who participated in the chat felt that a student’s input and approach to the work and to learning is as important as the mentor’s ability to pass on information and integrate them into the team. However, time was also highlighted as an influencing factor on a mentor’s ability to support their student.

Placement packs were also discussed at length and Lizzie asked whether they should be standardised, and what information should be given to a student nurse before they arrive at a placement.

The chat closed with some really strong sentiments which served to demonstrate what a passionate and committed nursing community there is on Twitter.
