New head of nursing at Robert Gordon University

The nursing and midwifery school at Aberdeen’s Robert Gordon University has appointed a new head.

Professor Ian Murray has joined Robert Gordon from the University of Stirling where he was deputy head of the school of nursing, midwifery and health.

He succeeds Professor Brian Webster who has been appointed to the post of assistant dean at Napier University.

Professor Murray trained as a mental health and general nurse at Perth College of Nursing and Midwifery and began his nursing career in Perth before taking up a number of academic posts in Aberdeen, Dundee and then Stirling.

He has a particular interest in family health nursing and was course director for the World Health Organization’s family nurse programme prior to joining Stirling.

He has also played a key role in developing non-medical prescribing. While at the University of Stirling he led the introduction of the first UK online nurse prescribing programme.

Regarding his new post at Robert Gordon, Professor Murray said: “This post gives me the opportunity to work within a vibrant, forward-thinking university and a faculty where inter-professional learning is at the forefront of curriculum development.

“I look forward to leading the school forward at this exciting but challenging time.”

Professor Murray also worked as a policy officer for the Council of Deans for Health from 2005-09.
