#NURSESHIFT: what is Nurseshift?

  • Comment

Nurseshift is an open online tweeting community that holds regular chats concerning hot topics in the world of healthcare.

From malnourishment and food etiquette in hospitals to whether all nurses should become mentors and have degrees, Nurseshift is the place to be if you have an opinion, a desire to meet likeminded individuals, or simply for those in need of a good-old-fashioned rant!

However, do not be fooled by our title - midwives, HCAs, doctors and professors have been known to befall the temptation of a thought-provoking and stimulating Nurseshift discussion!

What is so special about Nurseshift?

In a time where the future of the NHS is undeniably under siege - with politicians, government officials and board members across the country deciding our fate - nurses across the country come together every week or so and show unity. In what other professions do you see such dedication?

Nurseshift provides an opportunity for healthcare professionals around the country to come together, encouraging and strengthening one other’s passion for a job many fell in love with long before today’s politicians were even a twinkle in their mother’s eyes; a job where there was time to sit and hold an elderly patient’s hand whilst providing the type of comfort and soothing solace that only a nurse can bequeath; a job where there was 75% less paperwork and more time for one-on-one, person-centred care.

How can Nurseshift help me?

Perhaps by seeking out information and offering guidance on a topic that your fellow colleagues are just unable to help you with. Just tweet the query with the hashtag #nurseshift and you are almost guaranteed that someone, somewhere has had a similar experience to you and is willing to help.

How do I use it?

1. Set up a Twitter account.

2. Follow @STNNurse_Mikey (me) or @nurseshift and listen out for details on upcoming chats.

3. There will be a search bar on Twitter. This helps curate the same words everyone is using; for example, you can see what everyone is saying during a Nurseshift discussion by typing in “Nurseshift” in the search bar - and with every comment you make, just type #nurseshift next to it and your comment will appear along with everyone else’s.

Lastly, what is hashtagging?

Don’t worry, it’s just a way of keeping comments together. If I wanted to create a chat about the NHS, I would simply put ‘#nhs in every comment I made. Simple.

If you treat the illness, you win and you lose; but if you treat the patient, you’re guaranteed to win every time.

Thanks for reading - and join the evolution!
