Jobs watch 8 August 2006

An NHS nurse is emigrating to Canada after a trust reneged on a job offer the day after she handed in her notice because of ‘budget restrictions’.

Berni Curran, a mental health nurse at South Essex Partnership Trust, said she no longer wanted to work for the NHS because she was so ‘deeply saddened’ by the way it is treating nurses.

Ms Curran told NT: ‘I’m sure lots of new positions have been pulled on people nationally. I think, overall, it’s a really sad state of affairs. What is going to happen to those services if frontline workers are being pulled?’

A trust spokesperson blamed the incident on a communication error and apologised for any distress caused to Ms Curran, who leaves the trust at the end of the month.

Another 600 NHS job cuts across Bedford Hospitals NHS Trust and Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust were announced last week.

Nursing leaders have also warned that foundation trust mergers could lead to further redundancies and cuts.
