Plymouth trust went to Ireland to recruit nurses in bid to reduce vacancy levels

Plymouth Hospital Trust has held recruitment days in Belfast and Dublin in a bid to recruit registered nurses.

A team of matrons from the trust attended the Skills4Nurses jobs fairs in each city as part of its ongoing recruitment campaign. The events took place on the 23 and 25 April

In a press statement, matron Sarah Carlson said: “Joining Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust means becoming part of a team of dedicated staff, who are committed to leading the way through innovation, clinical excellence and great patient care.

“The trust has great opportunities for career development in a highly progressive working environment.”

Trust board papers from February warned that “recruitment is currently just matching turnover and making no impact on overall WTE vacancy levels”.

The documents recorded the vacancy rate for nursing staff in February as 5.76%.

Hein Scheffer, the trust’s director of human resources and organisational development, said: “Efficient recruitment was a particular concern given the pressures on discretionary pay resulting from agency usage.”
