Poll: Most nurses against including patient feedback in revalidation


Nearly three quarters of Nursing Times readers who answered a snap web poll say they think patient feedback should not form part of nurse revalidation.

In our latest online Poll of the Week, 28% of the 81 respondents answered “yes” when asked whether patient views should feature in the new system of competence checks, but 72% answered “no”.

Our question follows the Nursing and Midwifery Council’s approval last week of plans to introduce revalidation by 2015.

The NMC backed proposals for a system that will comprise an audit of post-registration education and practice portfolios and require registrants to collect feedback from patients every three years. They will also need to declare they have had an appraisal and are fit to practise.

However, concerns have been raised about the cost of introducing the plans and their actual value for improving patient safety.

    It doesn't surprise me that nurses dislike patient feedback: but who highlighted the problems at Midd Staffs, the nurses or the patients and relatives ?

  • constructive feedback is important. destructive criticism is exactly what it says it is, and some leaders seem lack the skills to be able to distinguish between the two and use the information objectively and constructively to enable them to evaluate performance.

  • Given the amount of 'feedback' that nurses are subjected to and deal with on a daily basis, I don't think that they have an issue with feedback per se. However, no untrained, unqualified member of the public has any right whatsoever to be involved in my revalidation process. If they have an issue with my ability to practise, then they can report me to the NMC any day of the week, without any consequence to themselves.

    A totally misleading headline !

    72% of 81 respondents DOES NOT equate to the MOST nurses !

    NT needs to stop publishing these "Polls" which really do equate to total nonsense.

    This publication is becoming worse than the tabloid press.

  • I have to agree with Jenny Jones, these polls NT conducts really don't mean anything at all.
    What happens if a relative or patient doesn't like a particular nurse, will they be asked for an opinion or will patients only be asked for feedback on nurses they obviously get on well with.
    Who is going to 'revalidate' or assess the unseen management or those nurses who do not have any patient contact?
    If staff have positive attitudes towards their colleagues but their patients disagree what will the outcome be?
    What action will be taken against nurses who 'fail'? likewise against those who 'pass'?

  • Two things to consider here:

    Firstly, why on earth wouldn't a consciencious 'nurse' want to have a patient's own 'feedback of the nursing care s(he) has provided for him/her?

    Secondly, how honest and accurate is the, 'patient's 'feedback' likely to be, i.e., was the patient unconscious throughout the period of time nursing procedures were being administered?

  • How many of us know that our patients lie to us? How many of us deal with nasty, vindictive and quite vile people? These people should, quite rightly, expect to be cared for by us in a non-judgemental, compassionate way. But it'll be a cold day in Hell before any of them have a say in my revalidation.

  • Am I supposed to ask for the feedback?
    Just from the patients that like me ar all of them?
