  • christmas is grossly overrated and when it eventually arrives it is a huge anticlimax and over in a flash and there is regret at all the money spent and unwanted presents. a lot of people out there have a very sad christmas and many are spending it this year damaged by accidents on icy roads or stuck in airports and may have lost a lot of money into the bargain. those alone or hungry are usually forgotten. for others life just carries on as normal with the same old problems but you can't get help to solve them or get anything done as the egoists of this world are taking time off work in the name of their religion. it is not always the religious who are the best at helping others many are obsessed with their practices and are often self orientated, including a nurse who I once knew who was awarded a gold medal and student nurse of the year title. She discouraged me as a first year student when I was trying my best to carry out basic care as taught in the school of nursing which also seemed the best way to give high quality care. She told me the ward had to be in order when sister arrived and patients only needed a face and hand wash as they didn't get dirty in bed and full bed baths took far too much time! She also filled in the 4-hourly obs book by taking readings from the first reading in the morning and altering it slightly to save the time of going round again taking the obs of the few surgical patients who were in the book because of fevers, tacycardia, tachypnoea or abnormal bp, etc.! how Christian is that - and a staunch member of the CU which she let everybody know about - and gave the impression of being a real goody goody and liked by sister as she always got her work done in time and had the ward looking tidy and spent most of her time chatting to the doctors over coffee in sister's office which was out of bounds to us ! I know many people who are not religious and others who do not flaunt their beliefs or go around imposing them on others yet are very caring and helpful people or excellent nurses or doctors - usually of a far higher caliber than the religious types some of whom come over as highly hypocritical.
