Tool to assess patients' 'spiritual distress'

  • Comment

Swiss researchers have developed a “clinically acceptable” tool to assess whether older patients hospital are experiencing spiritual distress.

The assessment procedure involves 16 questions and a scoring system.

It can both identify unmet spiritual needs and spiritual distress, according to the research team, which included four nurses, writing in the online journal BMC Geriatrics.

They tested the tool in 69 patients over six months.
