Skills at risk from DH post-reg plan

  • Comment
A new post-registration career framework proposed by the Department of Health could dilute the skills of specialist community public health nurses, warn unions.

The Modernising Nursing Careers document proposed five generic post-registration pathways (NT News, 6 November 2007, p2). But in responses made to the DH consultation last week, unions warned the framework did not reflect the specialist skills of community nurses.

Rita Newland, Unite/CPHVA professional officer, said: ‘Families and communities may not receive the level of specialist community nursing care they currently enjoy in the future.’

The RCN also said it had ‘real concerns’ that the pathways did not fit the work of nurses in general practice, adding that there was an argument for preserving a pathway for advanced generalist nurses.
