Obese children 'metabolise drugs differently'

  • Comment

Obese children metabolise drugs differently to those of a healthy weight, a small-scale study in the US has concluded.

Researchers from the University of Minnesota College of Pharmacy evaluated the way caffeine and dextromethorphan were metabolised by 16 healthy weight children and nine obese children aged six to 10.

Their findings were presented this month at the American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics’ annual meeting.
