'Everyone else seems smarter than me'

Can you advise this student nurse?

“I was never terrible in school, but when I look at the other students in my year, I feel like I am years behind in what I should know about nursing.

“Some of the other students have had some job related to nursing and I haven’t. I also haven’t spent much time in hospitals or clinics. Some knew that they wanted to be nurses for years, but I just figured it out a year ago, which makes me feel underprepared for training.

“Everyone already knows the answers to all the questions and I don’t know how to catch up.

“How am I supposed to keep up with students who have already had years of exposure?”

  • By displaying your five Cs and being self-reflective in your practice. Its not a matter of keeping up with others, but maintaining your belief in learning to be a Registered Nurse and professionalism.
Take any learning opportunities, and ask, ask, and ask again. maybe some people appear to think they know it all, but no-one ever does.
