'Have I made the right decision to study nursing'

Can you advise this student?

“I’m not yet a student nurse – I’m in my last year of sixth form. I’ve qualified to study nursing next year though.

“Becoming a nurse has been a dream of mine for as long as I can remember. I really want to work in a neonatal unit, just like my mum did when she was younger. She loved nursing, and always spoke really positively of her experience in the profession.

“I’ve just been getting worried lately, because I’ve been paying more attention to the news and it seems like everything has changed since her nursing days. Nurses aren’t being paid enough, they aren’t being treated well and there aren’t enough of them to go around.

”So I wanted to ask current nurses: am I making the right decision by going into nursing? Are the costs of the job worth it, or should I run in the opposite direction? I want to do something that makes a difference, but I don’t want to be unhappy for my whole entire career.”

  • I am only a first year student nurse so unable to answer completely, however I wanted to let you know that I shared, and still share, your concerns. All of the news is negative and it can be really off putting. However, I have just finished my second placement and can honestly say I don’t regret my decision. There will always be external forces which add pressure to the job, however the satisfaction of knowing I have made a positive difference to an individual, or their family, well out weighs anything else. It isn’t easy being a student and it doesn’t seem to get any easier as a qualified nurse, but if you want to help people and make a difference then you are entering the right career. Good luck with whatever you choose to do.
