'How can I stop feeling homesick?'

Can you advise this student nurse?

“I really enjoyed my first term of nursing but I’ve just come back after Christmas and just feel like I don’t want to be here.

“I’m 18 and this is the first time I’ve lived away from home. I was absolutely fine in September when I first got here but I think maybe that was the excitement. It’s so much worse leaving home now after two weeks back with my family.

“If it gets worse I think I’m going to have drop out, which I really don’t want to do.

“Everyone else just seems happy to be back, like it’s completely normal to be away from home, so I don’t feel like I can tell anyone how much I don’t want to be here - it sounds so pathetic!

“So really I’m just looking for advice on how to cope with feeling like this. I can’t carry on with my training if I move back home because it’s too far and I know I’d regret it if I left.”

  • I know how you feel I get homesick and I'm now in final year. The best advice I can offer is plan regular trips home for weekends have one planned as it is something to look forward to. Speak to your personal tutus try and last out the year if still feel the same way ask about transferring to a university closer to home I would like to say it gets easier it does for some it doesn't for others but if nursing is what you want to have that goal in mind
