'How do I balance studying with keeping in touch with family and friends?'


Can you advise this student nurse?

“My busy school schedule doesn’t leave a lot of time for socialising in general – even with my friends at uni.”

“My family is always saying that I don’t visit or call enough, and I do really miss my younger siblings. I am also finding it hard to keep up with my friends from back home.”

“However, It just seems like no one from home understands how busy and taxing nursing training really is. All I ever want to do when I get home is study and sleep. Taking the time to call people just stresses me out.”

“Does anyone have any advice for other methods of keeping in touch with family and friends that shows them that they still matter to me? I would love some advice on how to juggle keeping in touch and studying”

    It's a difficult one. I've just started 3rd Year - and this something I struggled with at first.

    As you've said people don't understand how difficult and taxing our training is - unless they've been through it themselves - and trying to explain it can be difficult.

    Firstly, I would apologise to your family, and explain that you do want to see them and speak to them more. But at the same time educate them on how difficult your training schedule is, and explain to them why it's not always possible - then they'll begin to understand much more.

    Secondly, with how busy our schedules are during our training 'finding time' can prove difficult. However, what I did was start 'making time' for me to see and speak to my family.

    When you sit and write your personal plan or schedule for revision/reading/writing etc. (If you don't do this then I would start doing so) plan specific time in your schedule dedicated to seeing and speaking to friends and family - or doing other things that you enjoy.

    This way you won't feel as if all you ever do is study, and you'll have days/times off to relax and do the things that you like to do. Not only will this help you feel more connected with family and friends, but it'll help you with your Mental Health and Wellbeing as a student nurse too.

    Hope this helps - and good luck with your training. Work hard, but take care of yourself too - both physically and mentally.

  • Ask them to be proactive. I explained to my family that I can be so engrosed in study, time slips by before I've picked up the phone. However, hearing from them, having a quick chat, can really help keep things in perspective. I feel more secure and supported after and can crack on more happily, having connected with loved ones.
    Wuth friends it's tougher, but I can still pick up exactly where we left off on the ever rarer visits home :-)
