'How do I connect better with people on my course?'

  • Comment

Can you advise this student nurse?

“I started studying nursing last year, and I think I made a mistake in my first term by not connecting more with people on my course. At the time, I was still really close with my friends from home, so I didn’t try to connect very much with other students.

“I was also pretty overwhelmed from all of the new information and challenges, so I allowed myself to focus on studying and not people. Now, I feel distant from others on my course.

“I really want to change this, but I also want to maintain my old friendships. I have found that studying and spending time with others is valuable, but when I introduce them to my old friends, it doesn’t go so well.

“How should I go about bridging this gap now that I am in second year, when we are all busier than we were last year?”
