‘I feel like I’m losing friends since starting nursing’

  • Comment

Can you advise this student nurse?

“A few of my friends and I decided stay back at home for uni and so I live with my parents, which already makes me feel separated from the people I’m meeting on my course.

“But now since starting my course, slowly my friends from home have started dropping away.

“Not all of them are studying to become nurses, so our schedules are very different.

“Sometimes I feel overwhelmed by the amount of work that is required by the nursing course. It’s not that I don’t want to be a nurse it’s just I feel like the piles of work and the amount of hours dedicated to studying is isolating me.

When I first started, my friends would ask me to do things like go out for a drink or something. At first, I though I could handle it but then it just became too hard to juggle the workload and social commitments.

“Every once in a while I will go out but not nearly as much as I used to. Now I feel like my relationships are taking a hit because I can’t figure out a way to manage my time.

My best friend texted me a couple times about month ago and wanted to go shopping but I had an essay that I needed to finish and I couldn’t. She asked me why I wasn’t around anymore but she doesn’t understand what it’s like because she isn’t studying in the same course.

“Now she hardly ever tries to get in touch and I feel like our friendship is falling apart.

I’m not sure what to do. I don’t want to loose our friendship but I feel like it if I keep prioritsing the course and saying no then she’s going to disappear.

“How do you handle the struggle of dealing with both life and university? Are there ways to go about studying that won’t consume my life?”
