'I want to have a baby while I’m still training to be a nurse'

Can you advise this student nurse?

“I’m coming to end of the first year of my nursing course and absolutely love it. I can’t wait to be a nurse. But, being a Mum means so much more to me – I have two children aged 5 and 6 and just about manage with them being in school and having childcare.

“The problem is, I’m desperate to have another baby and don’t want to wait until I finish my training. Is it possible to carry on with your training while caring for a baby? Has anyone else done this?”

  • Congratulations on finishing your first year and balancing your role as a mom and a nursing student. As a seasoned nursing professor and program administrator,
I can say with experience, success in a nursing program (or failure) can sometimes be based on timing. With that being said, are you actually enrolled in a program now or taking pre-requisites? I would never advise a student to, unfortunately, have a baby while in a nursing program. It’s too stressful and to much is at stake. Having a baby is a life changing event as is going to nursing school. Instead, make a long term goal and make a plan with a date to achieve this goal of becoming a practicing nurse. It’s okay to be a mom first and once your babies are in school for you to go back to school! Best of luck to you!!

  • Hello there, I am currently in my second year of my adult nursing degree and I had a baby in my first year! As I didn’t want to back cohort, I returned to uni within a week of having my daughter. I continued with my studies and placements all whilst breastfeeding/pumping too! It is totally possible, however it is extremely hard work and you have to be very self disciplined and organised!

  • I am just finishing my second year. I took the year out and back cohorted due to having a baby end of my first year. Take the time out to bond with your baby and just keep up with reading in that time. Good luck
