'I’m having trouble finding time to eat healthy'

Can you advise this student nurse?

“After I started my placement, I’ve had less time to prepare my own meals. I find myself constantly getting take aways as it is so easy and fast.

“My bank account is not thanking me, and I feel disgusting from not eating healthy anymore. Eating healthy has always been important to me and I feel that I should be eating even more healthily now that patients are watching me.

“But I never have the time to go to the store nor the energy when I get home to make my own food.

“Does anyone have any advice on how I can improve my eating habits while short on time?”

  • Hi,I completely understand your situation and it’s one of the many struggles I also find whilst being on placement. I am also yet to find a simple solution to this problem but I have a few tips that I try and stick to.

    As annoying as it is, meal prepping can be cheap and healthy. I find that if I’m working 3 13 hour shifts a week the best thing I can do on my day off is make a big batch of pasta and veggies and add different sauces and meat to make a few different meals that I can take into work or leave in the fridge for when I get home. Frozen vegetables keep for a long time and are so easy and quick to cook. A slightly more expensive alternative if you’re too tired on your day off is to buy healthy ready meals. Supermarkets have a huge selection with all of the nutritional information on which allows you to choose food that you like but is healthier than take aways.

    If you live away from home with other people you could offer to cook for your flat mates on a day off in return for them cooking for you when you finish work.
    Don’t punish yourself for having a take away every once in a while, sometimes it hits the spot after a busy day and that’s fine! If you get for example a Chinese takeaway meal one night you could eat half of it and add some extra vegetables and save the other half for the next day. I suppose it’s all about finding what works for you but I’d definitely recommend trying a bit of meal prep and stocking up when you go to the supermarket so that you only have to go once a week or once every two weeks so that you can rest on your days off.

  • Purchase a slow cooker! They are extremely affordable and I would recommend a large size. There are lots of recipes online so you don't get stuck to stews, and the only work you need to do is prep the food, then it does the cooking for you. Benefits are you know exactly whats going into your food, allowing you to plan your meals and only purchase what you need to avoid throwing money away. Plus, your house will smell amazing after a long day!

  • Hi I am no longer a student however still work long hours and like quick healthy meals. Slow cookers are good but there is also an electric pressure cooker which will also slow cook but produce a meal in 30 minutes or less. Frozen veg is great as no keeping and batch cooking and freezing.

  • There also good budget and/ or quick food websites .Look at Jack Monroes , Mumsnet and Slimming World.As the last person noted with frozen food , you will have meals for days.Tinned pulses are also handy for popping into dishes such as curry or chilli.Best to plan meals.
