I'm worried about the drinking culture

Can you advise this student nurse?

I’m just starting out at university and already I have realised there’s a huge drinking culture. And I don’t fit in.

I’ve never really drunk alcohol, and that’s never been an issue with my friends. But it’s different now that I have to meet people and socialise with them. That’s fine, I am a social person - but it’s going to be really hard to fit in with new people when they’re bonding while drinking. I won’t start drinking any time soon, so is there anything else I can do to improve my situation?

  • I had the same problem and people don't really understand as many advised me not to socialise with those that have a drinking culture. What worked for me was to hang out with them once in a while- I mean I couldn't really socialise much after lectures anyway because I had responsibilities. But if you live on campus- this could be pretty difficult so maybe take time to get to know those who also don't drink alcohol. Socialising can be other things apart from pubs/bars so maybe throw in a few suggestions like going to watch sport/ eating out/exercising etc. Before long, you will find people who probably feel like you and don't wanna take on a drinking habit.
So pleased that you're standing firm on not drinking - that's a very wise decision and wish you all the best in your studies.
