My first year placements: what did I learn?

  • Comment

Rachael Wheeldon let’s us know what she enjoyed about her first year placements

My first placement

I was on a dialysis unit and what a positive experience it was.  I loved being part of the team and as time progressed I looked after the case load of patients per session under supervision from my mentor.  I enjoyed every day and the experience inspired me to consider working in this area when I’m qualified.

My second placement

This time I was on a general surgical ward.  I loved learning about surgical procedures, illnesses and conditions; it really helped me when revising for an anatomy and physiology exam too!  I was sorry I didn’t get to observe in theatre and I would like more experience in surgery and theatres to see if this is an area I would like to work in.

My final placement

My final placement was on a general medical ward for the elderly.  I spent time with many members of the Multi Disciplinary Team and was surprised by the amount of planning involved to get someone home safely.  The satisfaction of caring for someone and aiding them back to independence in my mind is second to none.
