  • I would just like to ask what the RCN are doing about the current job situation in Scotland for newly qualified nurses. I myself have just qulified with a BN in Adult nursing from Glasgow Caledonian University and have applied for the few posts that are available to us. However it has been one knock back after another as they all want at least two years post grad experience. This is absolute ridiculous there are just no jobs here in Scotland for Nurses and yet the Universities continue to train Students.

    Hi Mary

This is a great question, I'm afraid this was missed while the webchat was going on, but we can email it to her to see if she can answer it for you.

Plus we hope to have more webchats with her in the future!

    Many thanks

Do you not get a guaranteed post through the flying start scheme in Scotland? I know it is not for everyone as it is hard for people if they have mortgages and kids and can’t move for a post.

  • It would be interesting in the current austerity climate to know how student nurses are being sourced.
    1. Is it being made clear that prior to commencement \acceptance as a student that jobs may be difficult to come by when training is completed.
    2. Is it being made clear that staff may have to move anywhere within their authority
    3. Will student nurses be prepared for the possibility of having to move abroad to find work
These are questions which i believe students have to give a serious and honest answer before training to be a nurse.
It would appear that in some cases nursing can be a cheaper way to acquiring a degree...and then taking off elsewhere in other directions.
It woudl appear that there is no rhyme or reason as to what you are entitled to 'if anything' once you have finished your training.
