'Student nurses don't often get the opportunity to celebrate their work'

I was so honoured and privileged to be asked to be a part of the Student Nursing Times Awards.

I was asked to judge the category, Placement of the Year: Community, an opportunity that I jumped at.

I think it’s a common fear that student nurses might feel like a burden and that they are getting in the way on placement

However I did also feel a little apprehensive as I wondered if I was really qualified for the job, not having much experience in comparison to the other judges. As I got in to the swing of things, I looked out for things that as a student nurse would help me make the most of a community placement.

I was met nurses who were passionate about nursing education and clearly relished being able to teach student nurses. I think it’s a common fear that student nurses might feel like a burden and that they are getting in the way on placement, but it was reassuring to know that students are appreciated in practice.

Nursing is having a hard time at the moment and its important to remember that the vast majority of us are working hard and are dedicated to our work

Attending the awards was also an amazing experience as I got to meet some nursing legends, student and qualified  nurses who are pushing boundaries, and talk to people I’ve been speaking to on Twitter.

I found that I even enjoyed being on trophy duty!

There was a real buzz and everybody was so excited to celebrate the achievements of those nominated. Nursing is having a hard time at the moment and its important to remember that the vast majority of us are working hard and are dedicated to our work. This is a sentiment that was echoed by all of the speakers at the awards.

Nurses don’t often get the opportunity to celebrate their work and the Student Nursing Times Awards is the perfect place to do so, so get your entry in for next year!

Being a part of the awards is such a fantastic experience, I can’t recommend getting involved enough.
