'Why don't my friends treat nursing seriously?'

Can you advise this student nurse?

“I’m about to start my studies and am looking forward to it. But when I’ve mentioned to friends that I’m going to be studying nursing, they don’t seem to treat the fact seriously.

“I’ve tried explaining the work that nurses do, and that nurses can work in a lot of different settings, but they seem dismissive of nursing in general, and keep saying I should have gone for a different course, because they don’t think it’s the best career.

“I try not to let it bother me. I’m really certain that I’m going into the right area. I know that it’s what I want to do but hearing them be so dismissive of nursing as a career path does get me down. How can I convince them nursing is a serious and valuable profession? Has anyone else experienced attitudes like this?”

  • Hey! I’m going into my second year of uni studying nursing and I absolutely love. Choosing to study Adult Nursing was the best decision I have ever made (I’m 22). You don’t need to convince them that nursing is a serious and valuable profession as it is renowned for it. Nurses are there when babies are born and we are also there when a person puts their head on their pillow for the last time and we are there when their last breath is taken. We save lives and help improve them too. We are an advocate for those who cannot speak for themselves. We comfort families and friends. It takes a strong person to train as a nurse and you should be proud of yourself for starting your journey. I cannot stress enough about what an amazing career path you have taken, it’s tough but it’s worth it. Wait until you get into placement and start making friends with people on your course. You should feel a lot better then. There’s always people who don’t appreciate things, but as long as you stay true to yourself then none of that matters. Good luck with your training ❤️❤️

  • People seem to still have old-fashioned thoughts about nursing, that we’re just ‘doctor helpers’ but that’s far from the truth. It also doesn’t help how the media portrays the NHS. If you really feel strongly about nursing then I suggest you do it regardless of what other people think. It’s an incredibly challenging BUT equally or even more rewarding. I have never felt so empowered knowing what I know now having finished nursing. Good luck to you!

  • Nursing is an extremely rewarding career. I feel like you shouldn't feel like you need approval from your friends to know this. Do nursing because you love it not because of other peoples opinions of it.
