'Will I always be anxious?'


Can you advise this student nurse?

“I’ve never really been an anxious person but since about a month ago I’ve found I’m constantly feeling worried and sometimes I don’t even know what about.

“I’m due to qualify this summer so we’re all frantically applying for jobs and researching our dissertations so I think I should be feeling a bit anxious but this is way more than that.

“I’m struggling to concentrate on anything and constantly have butterflies and can’t even put my finger on what it is I’m anxious about.

“I really don’t want to go see my GP because all they can do is give me medication which is the last thing I want.

“I’m hoping that once I’ve got my dissertation handed in and a job lined up I’ll feel better, but am I being realistic? Does anxiety just pass? I really don’t know what to do.”

  • Going to see your GP is actually what you should probably do - they don't have to give you medication and honestly they might prefer not to at first. You can ask to be referred to services to help with your anxiety but not take medication.

    I went to my GP regarding feeling depressed and was offered a choice of meds, therapy or both. So make an appointment and see what they offer!

    I'm sorry to hear you're having a tough time with anxiety at the moment. I have generalised anxiety disorder (where anything and everything could act as a trigger) so I can appreciate how you are feeling. Sometimes I can spend hours agonising over what made me start feeling anxious in the first place.

    The stage you are at in your training is a highly stressful time. I am sure that the anxiety probably will pass at some stage, but in the mean time you have got a final year to complete and anxiety can be terribly distracting. There is nothing wrong with asking for help.

    I would consider going to the GP because they can suggest more than just medication. However, I would like to point out that if you feel your anxiety is out of control, there is no shame in taking medication. I currently take propranolol which is a beta blocker and it helps to prevent the symptoms of anxiety. I actually find it pretty effective. You will be able to discuss with your GP about how you are going to manage it and come up with a plan that is right for you.

    Also, people had been telling me for years to try mindfulness (like meditation). I kept putting it off, but I have been using it a lot recently and the difference I've seen has been profound. Try looking on the App Store, or Google Play, for mindfulness apps. There are loads and many of them are free or very cheap. Perhaps download a couple and see if it might work for you.

    If your uni has a counselling service I would consider accessing it. They sometimes run workshops as well as 1-1 appointments and I have always found them to be helpful.

    Finally, make sure that in this time of chaos you find time for you. Make time to eat and stay well hydrated. Have a bit of a pamper and see your friends. I can manage my anxiety much better when I am taking care of myself properly.
