Is it possible to catch tuberculosis from a patient?

Find out how our expert answered…

TB requires prolonged face-to-face contact with someone with active TB who is coughing. TB is usually contracted from a family member rather than by exposure at work. Infection control guidance usually recommends masks for close contact and sputum inducing procedures.

The risk from random short-term exposure is minimal. If you are immune-competent the risk of acquiring TB is small.
